Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I know starting therapy can be a big step, so I’ve gathered answers to some of the most common questions I receive. I hope this information helps you feel more comfortable and informed. If you don’t see your question here, please reach out to me :)

Q: What is therapy?

A: Therapy, or psychotherapy or counselling, is a process where you work with a trained mental health professional to address emotional, psychological, or behavioural issues. It aims to improve mental health, resolve problematic behaviours, beliefs, feelings, and relational issues, and develop coping strategies.

Q: Who is a therapist?

A: A therapist is a trained mental health professional who helps individuals address and manage emotional, psychological, and behavioural issues. They have a minimum of masters in psychology and additionally may hold certifications and diplomas in counselling or psychotherapies. Therapists provide a safe, confidential space for clients to explore their thoughts and emotions, develop coping strategies, and achieve personal growth.

Q: How do I know if I need therapy?

A: Therapy can be beneficial for anyone, even if you don’t have a big problem. It’s a space to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a supportive environment. Whether you’re dealing with persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, stress, difficulties in your relationships, or simply seeking personal growth and self-discovery, therapy can provide valuable insights and coping strategies. Everyone can benefit from having a dedicated time and space to focus on their mental and emotional well-being.

Q: How much does therapy cost in general?

A: The cost of therapy can vary widely based on location, therapist qualifications, and session length. In major metropolitan cities like Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bangalore, therapy can cost as much as Rs.2500 or more per session. Finding affordable therapy in India can be a tough process. At Comfort Couch, we strive to provide affordable therapy services. We offer affordable rates and even have limited sliding scale slots available for undergraduate students to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent access to mental health care.

When comparing therapy costs internationally, prices can be significantly higher. For example, in the United States, therapy sessions can range from $75 to $250 (approximately INR 5,500 to INR 18,500) per session. In the United Kingdom, sessions can cost between £40 to £100 (approximately INR 3,500 to INR 8,800). Despite these differences, we aim to provide high-quality, accessible therapy services to clients worldwide, including Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).

Q: What happens during a therapy session?

A: During a therapy session, you and your therapist will discuss your concerns and work together to understand and address them. The first session is set for 45-50 minutes. This session will allow the therapist to gain an understanding of your issues, establish a rapport, and get to know what your goals are for therapy. This is a foundational step to understanding and addressing your concerns comprehensively.

Following the initial consultation, regular sessions will be conducted over 40-45 minutes. These sessions are designed to delve deeper into issues and goals, facilitating your journey towards mental well-being. Sessions may involve talking, exercises, or activities designed to help you gain insights and develop new skills.

Q: Is therapy Confidential?

A: Yess, Absolutely therapy is confidential. Therapists are legally and ethically bound to protect your privacy. However, there are some exceptions, such as if you express harm to yourself or others, or if there is a court order for disclosure.

Q: What are the limits to confidentiality

A: Your therapist will discuss the specific limitations of confidentiality during your initial session. Generally, they are only required to break confidentiality in situations where there is a serious threat of harm to yourself or others, or if mandated by law.
