Inside Out 2: Insights from a therapist

“Inside Out 2” is more than a delightful animated film; it’s a touching exploration of our inner emotional world. As a therapist, I found it incredibly moving how this movie depicts the richness of human emotions, from joy and sadness to anxiety and anger. It serves as a gentle reminder that every emotion we experience is valid and important. This sequel beautifully captures the journey of understanding and embracing our feelings, resonating deeply with both kids and adults (I mostly noticed adults in the audience, but you get the idea!). Here are some key takeaways that I wanted to share —

1. All Emotions Are Valid

All emotions, from joy to anger to anxiety, are essential and valid. This message is important because it encourages us to accept and embrace even the difficult emotions, understanding that they are a natural part of our human experience. By acknowledging all our feelings, we can better understand ourselves and our reactions to different situations.

2. Understanding Anxiety

The film portrays anxiety as a protective mechanism, constantly on the lookout for potential threats and trying to control outcomes. This depiction is incredibly insightful as it shows how anxiety, though sometimes overwhelming, is ultimately trying to keep us safe. However, the film also suggests that our anxiety needs care and compassion. As shown in the movie, sometimes anxiety just needs to relax in its armrest. take nice cup of tea and focus on what it can actually control.

3. Acceptance of Imperfection

It’s okay not to be okay. Change, even positive change, can be frightening and challenging. This theme is especially relevant today, as many people face significant transitions in their lives. The film encourages viewers to seek support systems and accept help, emphasizing that we don’t have to face our struggles alone. This message is a reminder that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

4. Embracing Our Memories

Our memories, both good and bad, shape who we are. The movie underscores that we cannot discard our past experiences, as they contribute to our growth and identity. Embracing our memories allows us to appreciate our journey and understand ourselves better. This concept is particularly important in therapy, where reflecting on past experiences can lead to healing and self-discovery.

“Inside Out 2” is more than just an animated film; it’s a beautiful exploration of the human psyche. It teaches us to honor our emotions, care for our mental health, and accept the complexities of our experiences. As we navigate our emotional landscapes, let’s remember that every emotion we feel is valid and plays a crucial role in our personal growth.
